Harvest Type
Cauliflower is generally a single harvest crop, though some varieties will produce florets after harvesting the main head.
TIP: Use successive planting to extend your harvest date. In warm climates, you can grow two crops of most brassica plants, such as cauliflower.
Transplant / Direct Sow
Cauliflower is a cool-loving crop. You can direct sow seeds or transplant seedlings.
When to Plant:
For fall gardens, plant seeds 8 weeks before the first frost date. For spring gardens, plant seeds or transplant seedlings 6 weeks before the last frost date. Seed germination does better when the soil temperature is above 60°F.
Days to germinate
8-10 days in full sun.
Days to maturity
55-100 days, depending on the variety.
TIP: Mix varieties of cauliflower in your garden to extend the harvest.
Planting Depth
1/2" deep
Germination Temperature Range
Cauliflower germinates when the ambient temperature is 50-80°F, and the soil temperature is over 50°F.
Spacing Between Plants
Space Cauliflower seeds or transplants 18" apart.
Growing conditions
Cauliflower tolerates warm weather and cool weather, making it a wonderful fall/winter and spring vegetable plant. Till rows to 18" or deeper and amend with high nitrogen compost 1' down. Water often keeping the soil moist but not soggy.
Companion Plants
Celery, which is also a cool-loving plant, is a beautiful companion plant. You may also plant mustard, broccoli, kale, or Brussels sprouts with cauliflower.
Rotation
Annually
Anticipated yields
Plan your garden yield at four plants per person. Expect 8-10 plants per 10-foot row.
